Summary

The patch solution:

  • When entering the weight paint mode, set the armature in the object modifier to pose mode;
  • Replace the selection filter for objects in weigth paint mode to objects in pose mode.

This completes the fixes for T56865.

When Lock Object Modes in on I can enter weight + pose mode quickly now. But bone selection seems to only work when "In Front" is enabled on the armature? Even if the bone is completely outside the mesh.

It may also makes sense to automatically use "In Front" type armature drawing when in weight paint mode, but that's a bones.

The other thing I noticed is that entering the combined mode this way only works if the mesh is the active object. Ideally it would work if the armature is the active object too, but maybe that's complicated.
