The vertex_group_vert_poll_ex poll function allows this operator to run in both edit and weight paint mode.

So I guess it should do something different depending on the mode, not just work for one or the other.

seems to do the same thing, so just allow both modes?

It's not clear to me that this function is intended to take multiple modes?

To be sure I would pass it ob->mode from the same object used in the poll function.
