The current latest active selection is not updated when selecting from outliner.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Open the attached .blend file
  • From the 3D viewport : Click the mesh, then shift click the bones. Press CTRL+P, you can link the bones to the mesh.
  • From the outliner : Click the mesh, then shift click the bones. Press CTRL+P, you cannot link the bones to the mesh.

Thanks for the report. This looks expected from the present code.
Extend range (shift + LMB) property for outliner selection only extends selection from the active element to the cursor position.
TSE_ACTIVE flag is not set for the last selected element so active selection is not changed here.
Feature added in rBfdcae9ed0c78: Outliner: Add range extend select and modify keymap
