crash when adding subsurf modifier
Closed, ArchivedPublicKNOWN ISSUE

Description

When adding the subsurf modifier to a model with sufficient vertices and being in edit mode, Blender crashes. The error is completely consistent for me when:

- Clear scene and add a plane
- Subdivide the plane 4 times (doesn't happen when 3 or less - I assume error relates to poly count)
- Add subsurf modifier
- Enter edit mode if not already

Blender "stops working" every time.

This happens in 4.46 and 4.47 with the key difference between when life was peachy to now-blender-is-useless, being that I have upgraded my ATI graphics drivers.

# CPU: Intel Core2 Quad Q9450 @ 2.66
# RAM: 8 gigs
# GFX: ATI 4870, 512MB
# Drivers: ATI Radeon display driver 8.512 (install pack version 8.7)
# OS: Windows Vista 64 Sp1
# Blender: 4.46 and 4.47

Event Timeline

Ok I can extend this bug beyond subsurfing:

- execute a Subdivide Multi on the default cube
- through trial and error I determined that any setting of 10+ crashes Blender

Hi,

This doesnt happen here, and those options are used by 1000s every day, so you should be confident we would have a flood of reports otherwise! ALso the fact older Blenders dont work anymore is a clear sign.

I would check what exactly happened with the ATI update. Try ATI settings, maybe reduce accelleration back to zero for testing.

Hey Ton! Cool!

Anyway I'm pretty sure it's an ATI driver thing (this bug is improperly named thus). I checked on another computer running 4850s in crossfire and the exact thing happened after installing the 8.7 driver.

The good news (and reason I haven't posted back sooner) is that ATI have released new drivers (8.8) and so far the issue seems to of gone away. I have been able to subdivide a cube till it was solid yellow and brought my viewport to its knees - but didn't crash.
