Instant Crash When Sculpt Mode Is Selected
Closed, ArchivedPublicKNOWN ISSUE

Description

Hi, sculpt mode crashes for me.

Even when I have done nothing except start blender up (default cube, camera, light) as soon as I click on sculpt mode, it crashes (no freezing, just windows saying 'it's stopped working'.)

My Specs:
Vista Home Premium 32 Bit
AMD Phenom 9600
4GB RAM (well, really only 3 b/c 32 bit OS)
2 ATI Radeon HD 3870 video cards (crossfire, but crashes even when only 1 is in use).

Thanks,
Trevor

I think the problem is in your graphics card drivers... sculpting works cross platform very well in Blender, but occasionally we get reports about failures in ATI setups.
I heard ATI updated drivers recently, please check?

ALso try all ATI opengl settings, disable FSAA or other fancy gaming stuff... but note that ATI (officially!) doesn't recommend radeons for 3d tools.... they advise FireGL because those cards have tested drivers for all 3d tools, and reported to work well with Blender.

I've got the latest drivers and Catalyst Control Center, and I've disabled everything I can think of in the CCC, and it still crashes.

OK... then the only thing remaining is to get debugging on this system! If you want, you can find on blender.org (get involved link on frontpage) hints for how to get into compiling yourself.
Also confirm you use official builds from blender.org.

What? I'm not a programmer. (my screen name comes from when I used to make Starcraft maps).

I have no idea how to do that.

OK; in that case we'll keep this issue on our radar, but we depend on support from a developer with a similar graphics setup!

Ok cool!

Thanks man!
Trevor

This is a generic request to test your bug report and see if it is still an issue in 2.5alpha2 if so please let me know by making a comment in this report ie 'also in 2.5alpha2' and I will add it to the 2.5 bug list.

Whoa this is an old one! The issue is long gone, but thanks for your concern! :)
