Previous files deleted upon instalation of Blender 2.53
Closed, ArchivedPublic

Description

Upon instalation of Blender 2.53 Beta 32bits on a Windows XP sp3 that previously used Blender 2.49b, all user files that were stored in the default directory (Application Data/Blender) were lost. Files lost include .blend files as well as graphics used for textures. I did not have files of other types to check if those could be lost as well, but I suspect the whole directory was deleted and replaced by the new version.

I was using Blender 2.49b, downloaded from Blender.org on May 2010. The upgraded version installed is Blender 2.53 Beta, downloaded from Blender.org on June 22nd.

While this is being resolved, I suggest to have versions for other operating systems checked and to notify users to backup previous version files prior to upgrading.

Event Timeline

I don't think this affects Unix systems, as there would not be run a rm -r from blenders install script.

I have just checked by installing the new version of Blender 2.53 over an existing 2.49b installation, both choosing 'Application Data' as path for the configuration files

None of the files have been deleted by the Blender installation. The .blender folder used by Blender 2.49 and older is still there but since it is detected as hidden because of the leading dot by Windows, maybe that is what happened?

Can you please re-check by viewing also hidden files that actually things have been deleted?

Assigning to myself for now to keep track of this.

Any update on this? Alec, can you do a file search on your hard disk to see if the files still exist in the hidden .blender dir?

Ok, having seen no other indication on this, no response and I can't imagine the installer deleting files by itself I'm closing this.
If new information arrives, can still be reopened.
