tested your blend file but it works ok here (32bit arch linux)
most likely this is caused by a file in the directory where your browsing.
can you try find out which file causes the crash?
Look for
- files with very long names
- very large files
- images that are somehow non-standard

In revision 30808 there was a fix for crashes showing with certain .jpg images in the file browser, so it may be useful to try a newer build.

Campbell, thanks for your suggestions. You are correct; it was something in the initial folder that the image browser was pointing at. I have it working fine, now. Thanks for your help, and have a nice day.

can you upload the file that caused the crash?, if it was an jpg could you test with a revision of blender after 30808?

The image file that was the problem is a tif which is using CCITT group 4 compression. I attached it. Have a nice day, guys.
