When installing Blender 2.53 beta 32 bit with the .exe installer, it crashes immediatly when starting. This only happens when selecting "Use Application Data directory".
Tested:
- exe installer with "Use Application Data directory" -> crash
- exe installer with "Use the installation directory" -> no crash
- zip "installer" -> no crash
Untested:
- exe installer with "I have defined a HOME directory"

Does your user name have any special characters in it? I managed to get a crash that way, in that case the path to application data will have these characters in it as well.

It seems a fix for such special characters was done in revision 30739, after the beta, so if that is the case here, this report can be closed.

Brecht, that is correct. There is an "ä" letter in the path.
I am going to download a newer version and test it.

There is no installer on graphicall.org, so I couldn't test it. As I have another issue due to special characters (still in revision 31293), I won't close it until a installer is available.

Unfortunately I can't use the Windows XP machine at the moment. But I tried to reproduce the problem on Windows Vista. I had no problems to install it there. (Made a user named ÄÖÜ)
As it is not possible to reproduce the problem on my current system, I see the issue as solved.
