I've noticed that all 2.5x versions of Blender seem to crash when the Unreal Development Kit or Maya is open. If I close UDK or Maya, everything works normally. I only mention this because it has happened with other programs as well, sporadically. The other programs seem to need to be using 3D in some way.
To reproduce:
Open Blender
Open Maya/UDK
Switch focus back to Blender
Blender should crash
Reopen Blender
Blender should crash on opening
Close Maya/UDK
Reopen Blender
Blender should work perfectly
Equipment:
Windows 7 64 (using 64bit version of Blender)
4GB RAM
3.0Ghz core 2 duo
NVIDIA 9600GT video card
500GB hard drive

Hmm, what does that mean? Open one blender, open another, crash on the second when switching back?
If so, I cannot reproduce on Windows 7 Ultimate 64b with 2 x ATi HD 5550 in crossfire (soft).
I don't really feel like downloading all of UDK (nor do I have maya installed), so if anyone could provide some stacktrace on this, that'd be great.
Hmm... I'm not 100% sure but didn't maya use openGL too? I don't own a copy so I can't confirm but I have played some OpenGL games while rendering an animation. So far, no problems. Not sure about what UDK uses...
If it happens on other programs too, I would suggest that you update your graphics card's drivers and if that doesn't help or you already tried that, try fiddling with the graphics settings on Nvidia's control panel.
seriously doubt we can do anything about this.
while it _SHOULD_ work, when there is problems like this its generally a driver or hardware glitch.
Even so, its possible there is some OpenGL failure that blender ignores, so would be good to run with a debug build.
If no developer can redo the bug it makes it tricky though.
Moving this issue to our todo tracker: http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Dev:2.5/Source/Development/Todo/Install-OS/OpenGL#Drivers_and_Configurations
We have been unable to reproduce this with our setups, so this becomes a long-term issue that may turn out not to be a bug in Blender.
Thanks for reporting though!
Yeah, I can't reproduce this on any other machine. The machine I originally tried this on has since died (mobo failed), so it may have just been a symptom of that. Sorry about this!
Also, all the responses to this ended up in my spam, so sorry it took me so long to respond.
