I'm a noob so be gentle. Was trying to follow a tut - went to add a background image using the "N" hotkey(reference.jpg), navigated to my desktop, selected the image, pushed the open button, and it crashed about 5 secs later.
Running OSX 10.5.8, NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT
Blender 2.55.0, r32738
On a PowerPC mac, OSX 10.4.11 Blender 2.54.0 r31878 this feature seemed to be working fine.

Hi, tested this on 64bit linux with nvidia gforce 6800 and it worked ok.
Does this happen if you restore factory settings and to this on an empty scene?
Can you see if loading the image as a background crashes if you are in perspective view?
By that I mean if the image isn't visible.
Is this anything to do with this spesific image file? - if you use the image edit to create a new image of the same size does it crash when set as a background image?
If you scale this image to 512x512 and assign as a background image does it crash?
It may not be easy to find one but if you could test with a recent SVN build it would help.
Ton has an old PPC mac, assigning.
All fine here, OSX 10.5.8, with ATI 9600 though. Tested with both own compile latest svn, as with official 2.55 release from blender.org
Sadly this only points at OpenGL that's not working properly at your system... background image drawing is a regular feature being used all the time, if there were issues with it we would have received a lot of reactions.
After a crash you should get a mac requester that allows you to see the crash info, that will give you info... can you attach the text here for me? (I suspect it crashes in opengl library...).
(Moving to opengl issue tracker)
Started with a fresh blend and attempted to load a background image - worked fine. Tried a new blend, turned on Quad view and imported - worked fine. Opened the blend included with the bug report - now working fine.
I apologise for a false bug report - I'm not sure why it was crashing, but it seems to have stopped.
