Hi,

Check the drivers for your 3d card... this is a common issue with drivers. :)

Stock Xorg install, nothing fancy... Ati does not supply closed drivers for PPC.

Hi,

I notice this;
Mesa DRI R200 20040929 AGP 1x TCL
Maybe there's a dri upgrade?

We have one team member using linux ppc on a mac too... maybe he can find a clue. But my best guess is getting the compiler & debugger and try to find the issue. You could also check the ati linux ppc dri website...

Hi Ton!
I think you are right with the dri thing... Do you think there is a way round this (ie. patch blender) or do I have to get Xorg from cvs?

gdb produces the same output in debug build as in the release binary:

If I turn off dri;
export LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=true
the problem goes away but I get very poor preformance...

hrms... why doesn't the gbd debug build of blender not give the line in Blender? Somehow it switches to the dri thread, I like to see where in Blender the crash happens, could give a clue. :)

When I see Stefan (nick sgefant) I'll ask him to check this. He uses linux PPC too.

Hi,

There seem to be some problems with blender and x.org on PPC. Could you try getting x.org from cvs and see if the crash still happens?

Hi sgefant!
>There seem to be some problems with blender and x.org on PPC
Tell me about them, I'll see if I can reproduce them on my TiBook.

>Could you try getting x.org from cvs and see if the crash still happens?
Tried that, but the build ran out of space on my drive.

I also tried the daily build Ubuntu Breezy(unstable) live CD from http://cdimage.ubuntulinux.org/ - but it did not boot, so... back to square one...

By the way, I found this googling: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=234062
is it related to this?

one of them is http://projects.blender.org/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=2587&group_id=9&atid=125
there's a workaround for it in the official 2.37(a) build, but not in CVS, so you might be able to reproduce it using either the ubuntu package or a cvs build of blender.

It doesn't seem to be, and apparently it has been fixed already.

The bug you reported also happens with the x.org packages from debian unstable, to me it's very likely that it's a bug in dri or x.org, as it doesn't happen with xfree86 4.3.0.

Stupid me... gdb is borked on ubuntu:
http://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4465
downgraded to gdb 6.1.1
a lot more interesting output now...
Is a workaround possible?

Thanks for the notice.
One would expect by now that bigger linux distros have blender in their regression suite to check before releasing. :) Maybe this is something the users of distros have to be more active in, communicating it back to Ubuntu for example. Blender isn't easily to test automatic though, especially not for the GUI side.

please confirm that this is still a problem with current CVS builds any unconfirmed bugs by the end of the week will be closed (they can be reoppened though).

you can get a current cvs build from

http://blender.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=18

This is a generic request to test your bug report and see if it is still an issue in 2.5alpha2 if so please let me know by making a comment in this report ie 'also in 2.5alpha2' and I will add it to the 2.5 bug list.
