There are some problems when using a curve to taper itself (tested with recent cvs build and 237a):
Add a Bezier curve and a Bezier circle and scale the last one down. Do not change the shape of the curve in edit mode, just leave it as it is. Add another Bezier curve.
Enter the name of the bezier circle (CurveCircle by default) in the BevOb-field of the first curve.
Enter the name of the curve itself (Curve) in the TaperOb-field just below the BevOb-field. A sort-of funnel (dutch: trechter) is the result.
Repeat the last step, but now use the second curve (Curve.001) as taper object.
This gives the intended result.
Now set the TaperOb back to Curve. Enter edit mode and experiment with the rotations of the handles.
I assumed that for the two cases, the resulting geometry should be the same (since both curves have the same geometry), but this is clearly not the case.
