When a new text object is created (3D view > Add > Text, or Text Editor > Text to 3D object), they can be edited (eg. correcting a typo from "Conttact" to "Contact") via these methods :
- interactively on 3D view (3D curve in edit mode),
- with the python command bpy.context.object.data.body = 'Contact'
ManuScrib is another method, it adds a convenient panel on the Object data property page to be able to edit and/or paste text on a simple input box.
Benefits :
- correct input and display of utf8 strings (the font used on the Python Console won't display correctly many utf8 caracters, whereas the font from the property page is ok (see related discussions links below)),
- copy text from external applicationn and paste it on a convenient input box on the 3D view,
