Using an edge split modifier will cause a crash on GLSL-based modes, but the issue seems to be rooted in CustomData layer copying between derivedMesh - editmesh. See attached file. To reproduce simply go to material view mode or textured GLSL mode in Blender internal mode.

Looks like there are more than one modifiers that reproduce this, array and bevel also crash. Increasing priority since this does not look too good.
