--- Short description of error ---
baking a generated material sometimes causes artifacts (see attached picture, left: expected, right: artifacts that happen from time to time)

--- Steps for others to reproduce the error (preferably based on attached .blend file) ---
1. open the attached blend file
2. go to the render> bake tab
3. bake at least 10 times and see if you get clean results.

Event Timeline

Tested this, it seems to me it has to do with the 'margin' bake setting.
I´ve had this prob yesterday (r54289) while baking image texxtures + geometry to normal map from hipoly mesh to lowpoly.mesh.
Highpoly : duplicated mesh w. 1x subdiv. + applied subdiv modifier.
Bake setting: clear, selected to active, margin 2, mode normals / tangent, split automatic.

There are grid-based artifacts on the bake. Seems to me it presents the mesh grid from the lowpoly mesh into the bake.
Margin 2 or higher - artifacts present
Change margin to 1 - artifacts are gone
Change margin to 0 - blender. crash to desktop
I can reproduce that error with r54336 with my blend and with the attached file from *kromar above.

- winXP
- core i7 2700k
- nvidia gtx 460
- ram 4 GB (3,5)
tested with:
r54336
r54289

re-opening, though it sounds as if the error your talking about is a totally separate bug.

Ralf, does crash happen with RC build from http://download.blender.org/release/Blender2.66/ ?
Also, could you please attach file which crashes for you? It could be some setting different in your default scene or so which affects n crash..

No reply in quite a while. Wasn't able to reproduce the issue and there were some fixes related on margin and baking since that time.

If someone still have got issues with baking, please leave a reply here and attach file which demonstrates the issue.
