If soft shadow is enabled it "feathers" the shadow with the color of the object

It's a byproduct of the "Receive transparent" feature. Disabling it will not use this kind of bleeding.
Also in 2.49 it renders like this.
Blender Internal render is not famous for its realism :) But I rather leave features like this in.

I was a little unprepared while investigating the cause of the "feature".
In the topic (link posted) above, there were some workarounds proposed.
