--- Blender version with error, and version that worked ---
Blender 2.66a
--- Short description of error ---
The following occur when Image Node is edited;- Render layer and node sockets disappear when the image source is changed from the default (single image) to generated, image sequence or movie
--- Steps for others to reproduce the error (preferably based on attached .blend file) ---
1. Create a multi-layered image in blender by choosing OpenEXR MultiLayer format as output file. Make sure to enable all the layer passes then render the image.
2. Open a new session of Blender and go to node editor.
3. Enable 'Compositing Node', 'Use Node' and 'Backdrop' options
4. Change the image source

Please always attach sample .blend file even if it's just few nodes and one image, that always solves all possible misunderstanding.
What's not so much clear here is -- what "image source" is for you? In blender source is either Generated, Single Image, Movie or Image Sequence. Changing this setting seems to behaving properly in 2.66a.
My only guess here, is image source for you is an image datablock used in image node (which you select from drop-down menu). Changing image used for image node indeed could have been lead to wrong sockets displaying on node. It was already fixed in current svn.
So, please:
- Test new builds from http://builder.blender.org/download/
- If it'll be still an issue for you, please provide .blend file and instructions where exactly you're clicking :)
Couple of days without response. Issue is very much likely fixed already.
Dwight, if issue still exists for you, please leave a comment here and i'll re-open this report.
