Works fine here.
I opened the file, rendered via F12. Image shows fine in Image Editor (Viewer Node mode) and Backdrop in Compositor shows as well.

Workaround is to click on the viewer node first, then press render.
Lukas, I'm guessing it's caused by this commit, does that need a version patch?

Yes, this probably would just need initialization of the scene->nodetree->active_viewer_key in do_versions. Selecting a viewer node is one way of updating this key. Note that active_viewer_key is just a weak reference (nothing harmful happens if the key is invalid), and it's not 100% reliable (e.g. renaming a group node may invalidate the key). Not sure if a do_versions is necessary? Ton wants to keep compatibility code to a minimum ...

Fixed this in SVN. Note that for some reason the viewer node in your test file is not associated to the viewer image, you need to first select it once, but then it should work again after saving/loading. Thanks for reporting.
