I'm using Blender 2.66.a+svn56462
Opening the compositor window, crashing the whole blender, regardless startup file or anyother blend file. Compositor opens, and within 4-5 seconds, blender crashes itself. If someone is fast enough to start working in compositor (check mark nodes, backdrops), the blender freezes with high CPU usage!
I'm on Ubuntu 12.04.
I removed the ppa (ppa:irie/blender) and downgraded to Blender 2.62. But Same problem. But I am using Blender on Ubuntu since it was 2.62 and it's the first time it is crashing. I have worked in compositor before in lower versions without problem.
I have been advised by blenderartists.org to post a bugreport here.

Description
Event Timeline
There was a bug in startup.blend in blender 2.67-RC which lead to corrupted compositor screen in 32bit builds. It was recently fixed, so please try using fresh build from http://builder.blender.org/download/ and see if it works fine for you.
If you've got crashes with your startup.blend, you'll need to re-save it using fresh build from buildbot, or re-create it from scratch by loading factory settings and making all the changes you need.
So I removed every last trace of installed blender from my system, deleted user-preference and startup file in ~/.config/blender 2.66 and I downloaded the recent build blender-2.66-r56521-linux-glibc211-i686. and ran directly from terminal.
./blender
it brought the blender and I tried to open the project/blend file (for better understanding the name was water.blend) I was lastly working on. It opened and there was no compositing option. But other blend files that I made in 2.65 or 2.64 worked perfectly and showed up the compositing option. I dont understand what's wrong.
cd blender-2.66-r56521-linux-glibc211-i686
./blender
libjack.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
connect failed: No such file or directory
found bundled python: /home/escapednight/blender/2.66/python
read blend: /home/escapednight/Pictures/rainy window.blend
Error reading Screen Compositing... removing it.
read blend: /home/escapednight/Pictures/interior.blend (previous project file made in 2.65 - had no problem)
Saved session recovery to '/tmp/quit.blend'
Blender quit
It clearly shows for that particular file, it's removing the compositing option.
This is exactly echo of bug with startup.blend we had in 2.67 times -- compositing screen is completely corrupted in files saved using that version and can not be recovered. You can either create Compositing screen manually or load file with "Load UI" disabled which will preserve current screen layout.
Thanks for the report, but root of the issue is already fixed, some possible echos of it could only be manually fixed. So closing report now.
Okay I Understood. I appended everything from that corrupted project file and worked in newly built blender. Everything is fine so far. Thank you.
