I have the exact same laptop and works fine with Windows XP and official build (as well as my own build).

This is why i said "on Linux" anc "Xorg". It may be a simple bug with ATI drivers on Linux. In fact, ATI doesn't give any driver for this card to Linux. I have to use the Xorg given drivers.
The real problem is that only Blender has such of problem... and i don't know why...
This pb appears since 2.34 and the only way i have to select an object is to get it in treeview... not really cool hu ?
So, if 2.33 works, what have changed since this version ?

metal3d,
I was helping to narrow down the problem - Ie confirming it was specific to the linux build, the additional information helps to assign the bug to the correct person.
Also is the Blender build you used official? If so is it the static or dynamic build? Also thanks for the additional information on which other versions do crash and also the one that doesn't.
Do you know how to build a debug build on linux? That would possibly help narrow down the problem a bit more.

Hello again.
I give some precisions ;)
This is for 2.40 official build and my own build has the same pb.
The bug appears only in Dynamic build.
I'm trying to do a debug build.
See ya in 1 hour ;)

Hi this is a driver bug apparently... usually can be solved by changing some of your driver settings or updating to latest driver version.
This is a generic request to test your bug report and see if it is still an issue in 2.5alpha2 if so please let me know by making a comment in this report ie 'also in 2.5alpha2' and I will add it to the 2.5 bug list.
