Don't know if this is the right category,
but blender crashes everytime when i select the subsurf modifier. Just uncompressed the zip file, started blender and selected subsurf modifier and before even displaying the subsurf on the default cube, the well known windows error "This program has performed an illegal operation...". So no preferences were changed.
But this error don't occur on all systems. Tried it on another PC and there it worked. Are there others having the same problem?
thx, buergi

> delete your .b.blend file and try again ... for some reason they cause problems occassionally
already tried, i tested it without any changes in settings:
1. unzip the M$-Windows zip files in an empty directory
2. start blender.exe
3. click moddifier popup and selected subsurf
4. booom ^^ crash
are there any debugging logs written in windows?
thx, buergi

start from the console cmd.exe
then any console writing should go there...

The console don't show any errors, just the default "using python 2.4" message.
But the error is absolute reproducible, it happens everytime, but i don't know how to get more debuging info.
hope this error will be corrected in 2.42

hrmmmm well it needs to be reproducible by someone besides you :)
try a testing build from the testing builds forum and see if it is also a problem...

I use Windows98se on a pentium2, 400mhz, 384mb-ram, elsa gladiac 511(i think) = geforce 2 chipset, blender version 2.41 without any .b.blend files or sth. like that, just unzipped in new dir and started. every blender-version since 2.25 worked, only the 2.41 doesn't.

Letterrip: the 'delete the .B.blend' trick is an urban legend. Anyone who has a faulty .B.blend file should post this in the tracker for me, I really consider proper file writing/reading a crucial feature to keep working for 100%.
Buergi: this is definitely an OpenGL issue. Note that windows 98 isn't well maintained anymore, and the drivers for such a system might be not well supported either.
Just try all settings for graphics on your system, like bitdepth (16, 24, 32 bits) and turning off all options, including all accelleration.

I downloaded the Blender2.42 test release and it's still the same error.
BUT: I discovered something very strange: If the following freeware app is running the crash doesn't happen: http://www.sysinternals.com/utilities/debugview.html
It prints out the debug messages, and still the message captering is switched on there are no errors in blender, and exactly at the moment i stopped capturing and add a new subsurf modifier or delete one blender crashes.
Perhaps this helps you to solve this problem, unfortunately the source of this app is not open i think.
Till then i use blender on linux :)
PS congratulations the new release RULEZ!

I am having the exact same problem. I use my laptop for this since our other computer is dodgy. anyway, it happens everytime, because I was going through the Noob to pro wikibook and it teaches you how to use subsurf so I click it and the "illegal operation" mesage appears, I tried to get details and its always something to do with this temp file. I copied the name and searched for it on my computer but nothing came up. I searched on google and got nothing about the temp file so I'm not sure if it helps or not.

since blender 2.42 the problem seems to be solved, no problems anymore on my pc.
This is a generic request to test your bug report and see if it is still an issue in 2.5alpha2 if so please let me know by making a comment in this report ie 'also in 2.5alpha2' and I will add it to the 2.5 bug list.
