create particle system type hair, render with object , in viewport render GLSL and only render.
the object emitter is not visible , when 'only render' is unchecked the object is visible{F95870}

Problem is this early-exit test in viewport drawing:

It seems tailored for vertex/face duplis, which will always be hidden when duplicating, unlike particles which can disable this by the use_render_emitter option ...
