Do you have PYTHONPATH envvar set to something? If so, please try to unset it (when set, Blender tries to use it for its own python, and since it’s usually not a compatible version...).

There are 3 main causes so far for problems like this.

Windows not updated.

You really really really need windows to run all windows updates on windows vista or 7. For windows 7 you need SP1 installed and for Vista you need to be fully updated.
Please check this, it is the most common cause of this problem and it almost feels like asking you to check if the power is plugged on but helpdesks do that for a reason...

Python related

Having PYTHONPATH, PYTHONHOME or any python related environment variables causes blender to try and use an incompatible version of python.
Even the official windows 3.4 python is currently incompatible as that is compiled with Visual Studio 2010 and does not include a proper manifest. Loading that will crash 100% either silently of with a message like the one posted above.
Please make sure there are not PYTHON related environment variables set.

OpenGL related

Please test with a software opengl driver

ftp://ftp.blender.org/sergey/softwaregl/win64/

For further bug reports please include the processor make and model and give an indication of how updated your windows install really is.

No news since one week…

Hello,

I was having the same problem. I had installed the latest Python before installing Blender 2.72a and b. The solution that worked was replacing the "C:\Program Files\....\blender-2.72b-windows64\2.72\python\lib" with "C:\Python34\Lib" folder.

It's crude and there might be problems down the line but at least Blender doesn't crash any more on start up.
