Hey there,
Crashes on startup can be caused by a few problems, so let's try a couple of things besides of the one @Aaron Carlisle (Blendify) already suggested:

  • Test with the latest build from Buildbot
  • Start Blender via command line using --factory-startup (let me know if you need help with that - using google is allowed too, though ;P)
  • Make sure you're using latest drivers (especially video drivers)
  • Upload the system-info.txt generated by Blender - help here

Thanks for the report @rhavin (.rhavin) :)

OK, thx for the responses.

  1. adding OpenGl32.dll (btw file is named wrongly in the link!) did not help
  2. starting blender did cause the following windows event ID 1001 (german system):

Fehlerbucket , Typ 0
Ereignisname: APPCRASH
Antwort: Nicht verfügbar
CAB-Datei-ID: 0

Problemsignatur:
P1: blender-app.exe

detail file:

  1. Card driver is newest available
  2. tried latest build blender-2.73-d993bad-win32.zip, same issue
  3. How am i supposed to create this "system-info.txt generated by Blender" if the program does not start?
  4. --factory-startup dont seem to do anything either, seems like the prog crashes way before processsing any switches.

Nevermind about the system-info, i always forget you have to be able to launch blender for that :D I think the blender.crash.txt would also be fine (should be in something like C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Temp\blender.crash.txt). But I would almost bet on the graphics card. Are you sure you're using this driver?

No, im using this driver:

http://www.nvidia.de/download/driverResults.aspx/45032/de

the driver you mentioned does not support AGP-cards

Sorry my fault then. Just remembered something different: On http://www.blender.org/download/ you can see the following note:

If Blender reports an error on startup, please install the Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable Package. Click here.

Have you installed that?

Have you installed that?

yes i have the redist. but even if i hadn't, i'd expect something more than just a crashing prog. instead, i'd expect a msg-box informing me that dlls x,y,z appear to be missing and that i can get them by installing Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable Package.

At least, thats how i coded things a few years ago when i still had MSVC running ;)

Hehe, yeah but you know, Blender is always special in such things ;) But you're right this should be addressed at some point. We are currently planning to create something similar for unsupported graphics cards, so maybe we could check this too

Anyway, back to topic now:
Could you do the test suggested by @Aaron Carlisle (Blendify) again, this time using this link? And the blender.crash.txt would still be useful for us :)

Also scan your computer for malware and viruses. we had one problem that caused this. this is a good program that i use to scan my computer https://www.malwarebytes.org/
