if i want to create an ear with dyntopo on. i use inflate to extrude the mesh. like in the cgcookie female head tutorial. in old version the mesh had all normals Point outside, now the faces stick into each other and normals are pointing everywhere. hard to explain. i can post images if needed.

Its impossible to sculpt with this behavior.

Anyway, from what you describe you most likely inverted your normals somehow, try (in Edit mode) to recalculate your normals outside (ctrl-N).
