STL Export doesn't export anything
Closed, ArchivedPublic

Description

Hello there,

I've got a problem while exporting a model into STL for my 3D printer using the current version of Blender.
Until yet the STL export always worked fine, but in this case the exported STL file is always empty.

In my blend file there are two objects:

  • Disc (export results in an empty file)
  • Text (export results in a valid file)

If I select other export formats (ply, obj) then the exported files are not empty.
Hence something seems to fail in the STL export.

Here is the blend-file:

It whould be fine if that export whould work. If the export is not possible due to invalid design (e. g. a missing face) then it whould be nice if the STL export outputs an error message.

Here is the system-info.txt:

Cannot confirm that here, works fine for me. Maybe the issue is related to Windows' horrible path handling again, so you could try to export to a different location. I also noticed that the disk is not selectable (click the arrow icon in the outliner), so make sure it's correctly selected before trying to export.

I've found a workaround for this bug:
If I export the disc as PLY file, create a new blender file and import the PLY file there, then I can export the disc as STL file from there.

It seems that the PLY export works more successful than the STL export.

@Julian Eisel (Severin):
Sorry, I didn't see your comment until now.
Exporting the file under a different location/different file name doesn't help.

Thanks for the report, but no bug here. As Severin said, your 'disc' is not selectable (see 'arrow' icon in outliner), and STL only ever export selected objects.

Okay thanks, now I know what you mean.
I must have accidently clicked the arrow icon.

But it is surprising that the PLY export still worked. :)
