proportional editing issue with "connected" mode
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Blender Version
2.73

Short description of error
the result of proportional editing in "connected" mode is not working correctly, the scaling pattern is not round, it has edges.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
add a plane, subdivide it (20 - 30 times)
enable proportional editing (normal mode) and scale one face.

now change the mode to connected and scale another face (this time it looks different)

i am not sure if it is really a bug, but it seems to be one for me

Not sure might be a limitation of the algorithm. Did this work differently in previous versions?
Maybe @Campbell Barton (campbellbarton) has some input?

This is working as intended, its using the connected geometry distance which happens to behave this way on a grid.

Today I experienced the same issue and I was about to write a bug report too.
This strange behavior of the PE in connected mode caused me a lot of trouble because it wasn't this obvious first and also completely unexpected.
I would say this behavior is far from ideal. Would be nice if PE would deform the mesh in just the same manner in connected mode as it does in enabled mode.
In addition of the "connected feature", of course.

Just one more thought about this problem:
Couldn't this work like a common work-around would do ?
Hiding the unconnected mesh appart from the mesh to edit, internally and temporarily.
Or possibly making a separate object from it, internally and temporarily.
Both works as a work-around, I just don't know what of both could be more suitable for fixing this.
And then possibly the "original" proportional editing algorithm could be used for editing, instead of the buggy one.

Greetings
