FBX Import Regression from 2.71 to 2.73.
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

System Information
Windows 7.
ATI Radeon 4500.

Blender Version
Broken: 2.73 Win64 (official)
Worked: 271 Win64 (Official)

Short description of error
On importing an FBX file some elements are now missing.
I work professionally with blender and use 3D models created in AD Revit (exported to FBX files).
I import these in Blender and work with rendering architecture.
Since 2.73 some objects (Mainly windows and doors / instanced objects) are missing.
They are imported as only an Empty positioned at the right place but without the object data.

As it is a working project I can not tell you a lot about it, but I have attached a zip file containing:

  • A working blender file from 2.71 representing the expected output.
  • A broken blender file from 2.73 representing an example of the missing objects situation.
  • The original FBX file exported from Revit.

File:

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Open blender 2.73.
  • import attached FBX file (any settings)
  • Result: all windows, doors, railings etc are missing.

As a note:
The work on FBX import is fantastic.
There are still things that would be nice to have (flat shading, materials, option for reusing exsting materials etc. for a perfect workflow between Revit and Blender.
Even though, because of the fbx development it is now possible to work with blender as an architect at a professional studio as a main application. Thank you for that! I appreciate it greatly!

Could you please check with latest build from our buildbot? I think this has been fixed already, but not sure…

Hi Bastien.

Thank you for the quick respons.
It has indeed been solved in the newest build.
(Sorry for not checking that. Will remember next time).

Do you know where is the best place to suggest future improvements to the Blender import / export workflow?
Thanks for the help.

Cool, nice to hear that! :)

As for suggestions etc., best place is our bf-gamedev ML.

@Maciej (drigerprg) Please make new reports, one report per issue is the rule here. And for me, importing with latest buildbot builds gives much better results than with official 2.72…

Sorry, I haven't found it earlier... If I would, I won't write any own posts...

But if I could ask, unfortunately there appeared a problem with the newest version of Blender. The importer seems to not work at all, could you help me?
There appeare error about unknown location. Is it problem with my computer or if blender developers done some changes?

I seriously need this feature because semester is ending and I have to do vizualisations to projects so importing model from Revit is the easiest way...

There is example of error. every operation is done correctly, also I checked with fbx converter if another version of .fbx file works. In every case appears this error:

also the .fbx file that's not working [converted to .fbx version 2013 with embed media checked]:

Hope I haven't doubled task yet and thank you for earlier answer on this topic cause it helped me really much @Bastien Montagne (mont29)

@Maciej (drigerprg) You are using an older version of FBX addon with a newer version of Blender. Not sure how you manage to do this. Here your file imports OK.

Tkank you @Bastien Montagne (mont29). I'm confused how version 3.2.1 got to my blender, but newest build has v. 3.3.2 and it's working well. sorry for absorbing you and thanks again.
