Most like a driver issue, please check with our brand new release candidate of 2.74: http://download.blender.org/release/Blender2.74/

You may also check those points:

  • Ensure both your OS and drivers are fully up-to-date.
  • Ensure your GPU driver supports at least OpenGL 1.4.
  • Ensure you have installed MSVC2013 redistributable package (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40784).
  • Try to disable any running antivirus.
  • Ensure you have no python executable available in your %path% envvar.
  • Try to re-download and re-install Blender.
  • Try the latest build from our buildbot.
  • Try to start Blender in factory settings (--factory-startup commandline option) (this will ensure whether this is a userpref or addon issue or not).
  • Try to tweak OGL settings in UserPreferences, System tab.
  • Attach here the report generated by Help -> System Info.
  • Try to place this dll next to your blender.exe (software OGL, will be slow, but will show whether this is a driver issue or not).

That line sounds suspicious, NVIDIA Quadro NVS 160M (Microsoft Corporation – WDDM v 1.2), as if you were using default Windows driver instead of NVidia one.

We had a similar issue with the Intel WDDM v 1.1,

Many other reports online show the WDDM drivers only supports very primitive OpenGL and fails to run many applications.

Can you test 2.74rc and see if it gives a warning on startup?

Yes, 2.74 rc gives a warning: Your system does not use 3D hardware acceleration. Three possible causes: missing or faulty graphics driver, remote connection or virtual machine. Two last ones are not true so the first one: faulty graphic card driver. Since it is a preloaded win 8 laptop, it can be true.

Then please go to NVidia website and download latest relevant drivers for your OS.

In any case, thanks for the report, but this is not a Blender bug (it happens now because we raised our OGL minimum requirement from 1.1 (which is supported by default Windows software driver) to 1.4).
