Unlike previous versions, in 2.74 a UV Map of simple cube on unwrap doesn't automatically create a visible map when All faces selected because there is no new image. Causing mass confusion in newbies like me following even slightly older Tutorials.

Blender Version
Broken: 2.74
Worked: (optional)

Short description of error
Shading/UV does not automatically create New Image during unwrap, if no image exists.
As recent as 2.7, a default image existed for unwrapping, this is no longer true. It was pretty, gray, and had a grid. The new version shows a gray rectangle, no instructions are on the Wiki Manual for 2.7 about this problem of needing to add new image (which is ugly and solid black.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
First, I'm new, so I can only go by tutorials, apparently this wasn't an issue even very recently. I'm learning with BornCG tutorials 2.7 Tutorial #13.

To duplicate, starting with default startupfile from original install package. Select vertices to unwrap the default box, standard 'T" shape. Mark Seams, Select all, then unwrap.(Nothing happens) Previous versions had an image preexisting; because, now, no image exists (must create new), nothing happens (confuses hell out of newbies like me, especially when that's all they do on tutorial) This appears extremely recent. And default is Black, no grid and Ugly.

End Reproduce Bug (If indeed even a bug..., I think it's a policy oversight, and lack of information in Manual)..

I'm only reporting this because it seems like it's Blender's policy to handle exceptions by creating the minimum necessary components, to allow an action by creating a default named 'unnamed' when doing something. I don't know if it's typical default on UV map for deselect all to show nothing, as the default new image is a black background with no grid, Normally one sees the grey with grid, however if one starts with grey, there's still no grid, because default is [Render result] which looks like the right thing, only rectangular instead of square, and it can't be acted upon, or if it can, I haven't learned that yet.

PS: Sorry, added file twice, couldn't delete (A suggestion, add delete option to added files?).

Hey @Chip Cooper (Cyberchip).
The reason you can't see anything is because the displayed image is the "Render Result" which you can't use for UVs as it doesn't contain the needed data. To get to the stage as in the tutorial you can e.g. click the 'X' icon on the bottom of the UV/Image Editor. You can also create a new image e.g. by clicking the '+' icon, then you can also select a not "ugly and solid black" version using the "Generated Type" menu.

Anyway, thanks for the report, but no bug here :)
