on-load crash for complex scenes / shaders
Closed, ArchivedPublic

Description

System Information
Win10 64, GTX980

Blender Version
2.76 tb2

Short description of error
scene containing very complex shaders crashed on load when loading it the second time
complex shaders = 20-30 textures up to 2048^2, hundreds of nodes

Note: I had occasional crashes before (2.75a and before), which occurred when I changed shader parameters. Could not find out when exactly they occurred. They "felt" like GPU memory overflow, but I am not at all sure about this.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
load the scene, quit Blender, load again

Unfortunately, I have no Blend file I can give you. I'm sorry that I don't know how to help you more with this...

also wanted to mention: after waiting several minutes, I can load the file again (and crash it again on second try)

We will need some more information in order to narrow this down. Some things to test:

  • Run from a console, and note any messages printed here.
  • Load the scene in wireframe/bound-box draw-type with "Load UI" disabled, Then reload the file to see if this is GPU/shader related.
  • Try limit the OpenGL texture resolution in case this is GPU memory related (User Prefs -> Textures -> Limit: 128).
  • Try remove parts of the scene (saving incrementally under new names), to see if there is a single object which is causing the problem.

Well… without a file it will be hard to investigate! Meanwhile, please:

  • Ensure both your OS and drivers are fully up-to-date.
  • Try the latest build from our buildbot.
  • Try to start Blender in factory settings (--factory-startup commandline option) (this will ensure whether this is a userpref or addon issue or not).
  • Attach as text file here the report generated by Help -> System Info (¡¡¡DO NOT paste it directly in comment!!!).
  • Launch Blender from the command line with -d option and attach as text file here any error printed out in the console (¡¡¡DO NOT paste it directly in comment!!!).
