Blender Version
2.75a official and latest build Blender-2.76.0-git.4aad17c-AMD64

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

In the startup scene with the cube selected, press Shift+G -> Parent to select the parent of the cube, which does not have a parent. Nothing happens as expected. The cube stays selected and active.
Press G to move the cube. Nothing happens. I expect to move the cube now.
