Please, allow OPENSUBDIV in edit mode, like it was in Blender-2.75.0-git.14dd88e
It's much more easier to tweak models, and edit shapes keys of a mesh with a smooth modifier

Thanks for the report, but this is not and has never been supported (option remaining visible in Edit mode was actually a bug).

This should be on the TODO list for Blender 2.8
