Interface slows down over time.
Closed, ArchivedPublicKNOWN ISSUE

Description

System specs:

AMD Turion ML-40
1024 DDR RAM
128 MB DDR Dedicated Video ATI 200M
Windows XP Home +sp2

Issue:

Interface runs mostly smooth at first, though it does seem slower overall in comparison to the previous blender release. Overtime the interface slows down to the point of making it all but useless. Sliders are delayed, scaling of interface windows slows, 3D view is delayed, etc.

Steps to reproduce:

Varies, but here are some of the things I've done..

1. Start blender.
2. Import OBJ file. Contains 2 meshes a beveled cube and a text mesh. Both are quads.
3. Adjust camera to center meshes in view.
4. Split view and place outliner in right view. Split view again and place camera view in center view.
5. Edit shading for text mesh.
6. Edit shading for cube.
7. Change light and reposition.
8. Shift-p to preview and make additional shading adjustments.

The slow down occurs somewhere between 3-4 and keeps getting progressively worse. Closing the preview doesn't effect the slowdown, it remains steadily the same and gets worse over time.

We have had this report several times, and it only happens on specific ATI cards.
Main probllem is that nobody with knowledge of Blender code and opengl has such a card, so we have no means to check how to find a bypass for it, or what the bug is.

Anyhoo, this is 99% sure a bug in the ATI drivers. People have reported the same 3d cards run fine in Linux, but slowdown in Windows. It also helps to downgrade drivers.

On blenderartists.org people have been discussing how to patch this, check this:

I understand this. But what is odd is that I don't experience this on previous versions of Blender, only happens with 2.42. I'm curious if anything has changed that might cause this, perhaps something I can avoid or a setting I can change. I appreciate your prompt response.

You should really verify that with a 2.41 release, it might be with different steps... but this slowdown issue was reported to happen for a long time (2.3 series too).

The steps you mention don't give a clue really. You could help us by finding the exact reason that causes a slowdown. Is it the outliner? splitting views? Using a specific tool?

You also don't mention which of the RC's you tested, I guess RC3?

What has changed was that we displayed float buffers now, for the 3d preview and buttons preview. Try to avoid displaying these previews, and check if that solves slowdown.

This is a generic request to test your bug report and see if it is still an issue in 2.5alpha2 if so please let me know by making a comment in this report ie 'also in 2.5alpha2' and I will add it to the 2.5 bug list.
