How to achieve crash:
- Open blender
- Turn off orthographic view (Did this by hitting 5 on numpad)
- Default cube should already be selected
- While in buttons windows, went to Object -> Physics Buttons -> Fluid Sim tab -> Enable -> Domain
- Hit [A] to deselect cube
- Added Ico Sphere by hitting space and selecting it from menu (with subdivision 4) and then hit Mode: dropdown and selected 'Object Mode'
- Repeated same process as before except hit particle in Fluid Sim Tab instead of Domain
- Then blender crashed
This happens to me when I do that on my computer and only in that order couldn't get Blender to crash any other way.
PS: Love Blender :)

Cannot reproduce under linux with release version. Which OS
are you using?
As an aside, there's a debugging printf in
build_particle_system() which should probably be removed.

Using Windows XP with all the lastest updates. If there is any other details you want let me know, I'm happy to help (First time I've reported bug, decided I should do my bit to help Blender)

Cannot redo either (OSX).
I've attached a .blend file, exactly according steps as described. Please check?
In general it is much better to add a .blend here for us, there can always be variables in your setup we don't redo exactly the same.
Khughes; that print I left in... the fact it prints on each redraw is even a bug in the fluid particle code.

I just tried it again on a different XP computer(with SP2, like my computer) and I couldn't get it to happen so either it's a bug that only affects a small number of computers or theres something wrong with my computer.
But even on my computer the crash will only happen if the steps I describe are the very first thing I do, if a do anything else first then the crash won't happen until I close Blender and reopen it. I'll get it to work on my computer again and try to produce a complete list of all the software drivers, software installed, windows updates, hardware etc... I'm using on my computer. Is there any specific information I should add (eg date I downloaded blender) or any other important varibles I left out?
PS: When I get on my computer next I'll make a blender file where all you have to do is press one button and it crashes (if possible)

Hi,
In that case the error might well be in the graphics system. It's always helpful to post full graphics specs of your system here.

I also couldn't reproduce that with linux...
the fluidsim particles currently get rebuild each redraw, that should probably be reduced to frame changes

OK, Sorry I haven't done what I said I would, I have alot of assignments to get through right now. As for hardware I just thought I would mention that I have a Radeon 9600 SE, theres some info on it here http://www.ati.com/products/radeon9600/radeon9600pro/specs.html. Can't do much more to help right now, sorry.

I've got a ATI 9600 in my mac, works pretty good.
The only thing I can advise you is to check on driver install and driver settings. Try to figure out what differs between the two computers you tried it with.
You could also install the free MS Visual studio kit, this will give you more elaborate crash reports.
I'm still not 100% if it is a graphics issue, but all evidence points to it.

Moved to opengl issue tracker.
Aussiedude: Just keep testing and try to find out what you can tweak in OpenGL? The result would be nice for our FAQ. I'll keep listening to replies here. :)

@ton - Do you know where I can get that, a link to where on the MS site would be nice. By tweak to you mean change settings in Opengl (AA, install new drivers etc)?
@all - I just finished my Business studies assignments and IPT accessment task so now I have some more spare time to test this some more. I must warn you, I don't have much knowledge on this sort of stuff, but I'm quite willing to learn. I'm on the OpenGL website now, is there anything in particular which I could install that would help determine any specific information about the crash if the crash is related to OpenGL? If it's not related to OpenGL what else might cause computer specific bugs like this. Also is there any programs which I could use that would collect info about my hardware so I can post it here, if not what specific info would I need (should I post what type of RAM I have or the driver for my GFX card etc). I'd check now what my GFX card is but I'm posting this from school not my computer. So basically I'm just saying I know I've been a bit slack in posting info but I'm finished all the pressing school work needed (DAM HSC!) and now I can start helping.
PS Is there anyone who actually has experienced this bug or am I the ONLY one.
[random thought: wiped my computer about 3-4months ago, still using the original driver my GFX card came with (ATI Radeon 9600 SE) on the CD. Before I wiped my computer I was using an updated driver which I think was even a Mircosoft Driver :| hmm? strange, must investigate...]

ATI drivers you can download from www.ati.com.
The MS or opengl websites won't help much.
For OpenGL settings; disable FSAA at least, and try reducing accelleration (usually a slider)
ALso try the blenderartists.org forums, there were more XP users with ATI problems.

Ok, I've spent some time collecting info about software on my computer and hardware. I'm guessing I got too much and only a tenth of this will be of any use but I wasn't sure exactly what info to post to I thought "Can't tell what to post... O well, post all of it!". I started to worry a bit before because I couldn't get blender to crash myself before doing the instructions I posted but I got it to work eventually. I was thinking maybe I should install a program like what some people use to make video tutorials so I can record what I'm doing to show you, does anyone know any good OSS which I could use to do that.
Oh yeah and I tryed reducing accelleration (I even tryed no acceleration) and Blender still crashed. Although I'm not sure what you mean by FSAA? I'll try experimenting with other settings as well.
PS: For anyone still trying to reproduce the bug, try repeating the process multiple times, sometimes blender won't crash until the third time try for me. Remember to close blender after each try.
This is a generic request to test your bug report and see if it is still an issue in 2.5alpha2 if so please let me know by making a comment in this report ie 'also in 2.5alpha2' and I will add it to the 2.5 bug list.
