Opening Material shuts down the program

Based on a (as simple as possible) attached .blend file with minimum amount of steps
Select Material from the bottom bar and watch the program instantly shut off.
If you use blender 2.76b, there should be 'save system info' in help menu.
The file which environment of blender which you use if you choose it was listed in is made.
You drop the file in the area that inputs comment into Bug tracker, and the file is uploaded if you submit a message.
This is an issue i've seen a couple of times, but not recently. In most cases caused by graphics drivers. Please try if updating your drivers helps, try if older versions of Blender work, try if the newest Blender builds work (buildbot), ...
