Global Material Override does not work in Cycles viewport

Windows 10, Nvidia Geforce Gtx 750 Ti

Blender Version
Broken: 2.77 hash: 22a2853
Worked: didn't test but was already broken in 2.76

Short description of error
The global material override (clay render) in the scene buttons is not working (anymore?) for the Cycles render engine VIEWPORT render.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. set cycles render engine
  2. add several objects with different colored materials.
  3. go to scene buttons and select one of the materials in the dropdown.
  4. live-render the viewport

its not a bug - press the "renderlayer" button in the 3d viewport header

Right, it's a per render layer setting, which is not used in the viewport by default.
