Rendered Viewport Crashes Entire Computer
Closed, ArchivedPublic

Description

System Information
OS: 64bit Ubuntu 15.10, kernel 4.2.0-34
GPU: GTX 650 Ti Boost, driver version 352.21
Operating system and graphics card

Blender Version
Broken: 2.77a abf6f08
Worked: 2.76a 12e4da6

Short description of error
When blender is set to use Cycles Render and the viewport is set to Rendered and I start moving the viewport perspective around, it will randomly either completely freeze my entire computer or cause my computer to suddenly reboot. This, by the way, is when the cycles device is set to CPU.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Just set the cycles viewport to rendered in CPU mode, and move the camera around. May take a while to manifest. May be Linux or Ubuntu specific.

Here is a copy of my startup.blend and userpref.blend files:

PS: I just tested this issue with 12e4da6, and found that the issue sort of does occur, but instead of crashing/freezing the entire computer, it just crashes blender.

I booted up with my Windows 8 drive, and my computer still locked up after fiddling around in rendered viewport. So, the issue is not specific to Linux/Ubuntu.

Please close this report. I've encountered this issue outside of blender (youtube html5), so I think I can reasonably conclude that my computer is developing hardware problems.

Sergey Sharybin (sergey) changed the task status from Unknown Status to Unknown Status.Apr 12 2016, 9:48 AM
Sergey Sharybin (sergey) claimed this task.

While blender can crash itself, it can not make any harm to a properly working OS and hardware.

Check your memory using memtest.

@Sergey Sharybin (sergey) Thanks for the tip. Though, nothing showed up on the memory test. Just a bit ago though, while booting up to my Windows drive, my motherboard's utility software gave me a warning that one of my chassis fans (one on top of the case, directly above the CPU) was not running. I fiddled with the connections and fixed that. The problem doesn't seem to happen anymore.
