I downloaded blender 2.42a(after 2.37a download),when i opened blender as follows:
[rohitsz@localhost blender-2.42a-linux-glibc232-py24-i386]$ ./blender
guessing './blender' == '/home/rohitsz/software/blender-2.42a-linux-glibc232-py24-i386/./blender'
Compiled with Python version 2.4.
'import site' failed; use -v for traceback
Checking for installed Python... No installed Python found.
Only built-in modules are available. Some scripts may not run.
Continuing happily.
...
On the GUI mode, whenever i right click on the main screen, i get this:
http://www.geocities.com/rohitsz/logs/blender.png
the console is like this:
...
Segmentation fault
[root@localhost blender-2.42a-linux-glibc232-py24-i386]#
No more details. The GUI hangs and,I have to then restart the X-Server.

Well, that's a clear signal there's something wrong with the opengl driver install.
You could test this:
- does 2.37 (our release) or older ones have similar errors?
- can you install a newer driver, or drivers from ATI iself?
