Short description of error
Can get blender to crash with an Open, Click, Click.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Open attached .blend file.
Click the 'Render' button in the Properties Panel.
Click the 'Render' button to render the scene.
Crash. Not intermittent.

Note that rendering works OK if you just open the file and hit F12.
This makes me think it may be a user interface bug.
This file has probably been opened and saved in multiple versions of Blender. I'm pretty sure, but not certain, that it was never opened in an unofficial release version of Blender (i.e., the file itself should not be corrupt due to using unreleased versions of Blender).

I can't reproduce the problem with either the official 2.79 release or latest master, with Ubuntu 17.10.

But I'm also not sure I understand the description, do you press the Render button in the properties editor twice, or are you using some different button the second time? The scene contains a compositing nodes setup without any nodes except the output. So it only really does compositing and shows a black result. Which may a corner case that is not tested much and has a bug, but I can't repro any crash.

From the looks of this uploaded crash report (which I thought I looked at before), I'm going to guess that it's related to an addon. I'll try to narrow it down further. You can close this one if you want, after looking at the crash report. I can file another one after I try to narrow it down further.

As a mental note for developers: I looked for an easy way to disable all enabled addons, then re-enable them later, because I thought the crash might be related to an addon, but I didn't see a way to do that. This might be a good feature request. (I have a lot of addons enabled by default).

I disabled all addons (except Cycles), and the crash does not occur. So, it appears addon related.

I know there's no rendered output. I was stripping everything out of the .blend file to narrow down the problem. Seems I didn't quite get there.

Brecht Van Lommel (brecht) claimed this task.

From the crash log, it seems this is actually a known issue with particle systems, which is being addressed in Blender 2.8.

There can be crashes when rendering and drawing particles in the viewport at the same time. The workaround is to enable the little lock icon in the Render panel. It's quite random some addons being enabled or not can have some indirect impact on it.
