I can reproduce the bug as follows:
start blender
the cube is marked, I press "g" for moving it
I'm holding down the middle mouse button (a mouse wheel in my case)
I start to move the mouse
I am at the login screen of my system instantly, no error message, nothing. After a login the system seems to behave as usual.
Operating System:
ubuntu linux 6.10 (amd64), up to date using official repositories only
Blender version (got it via package manager):
blender 2.42a
built in 2006-09-20 02:11:16 Version linux2 dynamic
3D card:
Radeon X800 SE (R423)
using xorg-driver-fglrx 7.1.0-8.28.8+2.6.17.6-1 and xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.6.2-0ubuntu4
I do not have another linux system available to test, but with winxp on the same machine, the problem does not occur.

also a quick note, there might be issues on 64bit versions of blender (assuming it has been built 64 bit). The reason is that the file format isn't currently 64bit safe (will be fixed after 2.43 release) and thus saving is incompatible between 32bit and 64bit versions of blender.

I can confirm the problem with a Radeon 7000 video card and the dri drivers. On my machine the error occurs, when direct rendering is turned off. Check your file /var/log/Xorg.0.log
for messages like "(WW) RADEON(0): Direct rendering disabled"

The problem has gone away after I have installed the proprietary linux driver properly. Is the problem therefore most likely a bug of the mesa driver?

possibly, the only way to find out though is to file a bug report with the people who will know how to investigate it properly.

This is a generic request to test your bug report and see if it is still an issue in 2.5alpha2 if so please let me know by making a comment in this report ie 'also in 2.5alpha2' and I will add it to the 2.5 bug list.
