If I use the border select tool (button b) I can't see the rectangle wich shows me the area I will select. the same thing on "smooth selection", button b-b. I tested it with two versions, 2.42a and 2.43 RC1. I don't know if you will be able to redo it, but I got it with an fresh OS X installation, too. Maybe it's something Intel Mac related? Unfortunately the intel on-board graphics is very cheap and low quality... a choice Apple should not have made actually. Too bad their macbook pro's cost almost twice the money. :)
(It's a known issue with intel graphics, also for pcs...)

I tried the latest blenderbuilds.com build for Intel-Macs recently and the bug's gone! Till today wasn't any graphics driver Update in OS X, so maybe it was inside blender...however, it's working now.

We received a month ago a patch from a user who fixed several of the intel mac issues, that's why. :)
