2.43 RC2 crash when using Box Select (B) in edit mode for mesh (WinXP)

Description

When in edit mode for mesh, performing a box select (B) crashes Blender as soon as the box touches any vertices. Blender does however NOT crash when painting the selection (B and then B again). This happens in 90% of the cases.
