Blue screen, at startup, ATI 1950pro?
Closed, ArchivedPublicKNOWN ISSUE

Description

I bought a new video card, the ATI 1950pro(256megs). And of course installed new drivers ATI 7.1. I cannot start Blender 2.42 or 2.43 at all. It gives me a blue screen of death, with message ' ATI2DVAG' infinity loop.

I was able to use Blender 2.41 and earlier versions to 2.30 with no apparent problem. Is this an OGL problem. or an ATI problem. With my older videocard ATI X700 I could run 2.42 before.

Problems like this are almost always related to your graphics card and drivers and not really Blender issues. Apparently you are not alone. Googling for ATI2DVAG turns up a lot of entries.

try turning down your hardware acceleration in your ati opengl settings that might allow blender to run. But you should also file a bug report with ATI.

Yes, an OpenGL problem. I am very interested to hear exect details though. Such problems we don't want with newly purchased cards.

-> are you sure 2.41 and earlier versions work with this card?
-> check all options as ATI provides you with. There must be a menu to tweak opengl settings and performance. Disable everything that smells like game optimizing or speed hacks.
-> also check blender.org support faq for hints

I solved it myself. I posted this on the Help forum.

ATI x700 pro
win xp sp2
1 gig ram
AMD 3000

it ran with I believe the CAT 5.4 atioglxx.dll driver

I installed any CAT driver to a temp, then found the ogl driver;
atioglxx.dl_
found expand.exe(16kb) and copied this
Then went to DOS mode;
c> expand atioglxx.dl_ c: atioglxx.dll
Then copied this to \system32 and \dllcache folders.

I just bought the new ATI 1950pro videocard and couldn't get Blender to work with the latest driver CAT 7.1. So I tried a previous driver and found that the

(CAT 6.11 atioglxx.dll) worked with the CAT 7.1 driver.
And now Blender 2.43 works!!!!

This is very confusing info, can you type it in a way we can copy it for our faq?

I think the short version is: do not use latest ATI driver.

FAQ: Problem getting Blender 2.42, 2.43 to run on an ATI videocard.
(Atleast the two videocards I had, ATI X700pro and ATI 1950pro and WIN XP.)

1.) Run (CAT 5.4 for my ATI X700pro)(CAT 6.11 for my ATI 1950pro)driver software.
It'll show a directory, but change it to some temporary
directory name. Then it'll ask you whether to install. Click 'CANCEL'.
3.)Locate the file called atioglxx.dl_.
(for CAT 5.4 its in the ATI\support\driver\2KXP_inf\B_22056\atioglxx.dl_
version 6.14.10.5014
(for CAT 6.11 ATI\support\driver\2KXP_inf\B_40582\atioglxx.dl_
version 6.14.10.6174

2.)Do a file search for a small MS program called 'expand.exe'. (mine was in Documents and 16kb in size)
3.)Copy this expand.exe to the temporary directory you extracted the ATI CAT driver file atioglxx.dl_.
4.)Run the 'command prompt' to go down to DOS level. Change directory CD to where the expand.exe and
you atioglxx.dl_ file is.
Example;
c:> expand atioglxx.dl_ c: atioglxx.dll
5.) Copy the atioglxx.dll to your Windows\system32 and Windows\system32\dllcache directories.

*Note CAT 7.1 didn't work with ATI 1950 pro so I went back until I found one that did.

Are you formatting text some way we don't see here?
Anyhoo, maybe for a Windows user this makes sense.. will ask them to check it and put on our faq. Thanks!

This is a generic request to test your bug report and see if it is still an issue in 2.5alpha2 if so please let me know by making a comment in this report ie 'also in 2.5alpha2' and I will add it to the 2.5 bug list.
