Trying to bevel a bezier curve with a circle, but when I try to select the object (Properties>Object Data panel>Geometry>Bevel>Object) with the eyedropper, it does not register any object at all. I can wave the eyedropper over every object and it senses nothing. I tried dragging the circle object from the collections panel into the Object picker and Blender crashes and automatically closes.

You are doing it wrong. Use the Eyedropper to select objects from the 3d view.

Dragging from the collections list into the Bevel Object field works on Linux with the 29-Jan build.

I'm probably not explaining this right. That's what I'm trying to do, but when hovering the eyedropper over the object in the 3D viewport it does not indicate that there's an object able to be selected. As a second attempt, I tried to drag the object from the collections panel and that's what crashed Blender. But the main way of selecting it (eyedropper in the 3D viewport) doesn't allow me to select any object at all.

Tested and this works for me. rBa1ae04d15a9faaa9b4dc59e8a5bec02a7c69b255

Here's the blend file:

The "circle" in you scene is a mesh object. It needs to be a curve object as well. If you click on the bevel/taper input field you will get a list of valid object you can select.

If I add a circle curve object, it shows up in that list and I can additionally also select it in the 3d view port with the eye dropper.

Ah my mistake. thanks for the help
