Texture Paint - Locked into solid color rendering/Incorrect display of shader node configuration/Contextual menu auto closes
Closed, ArchivedPublic

Description

System Information
Operating system: Mac OS Mojave 10.14.1
Graphics card: MD FirePro D700 6144 MB

Blender Version
Broken: Version 2.80 (2.80 2019-02-15, Blender Foundation)

Short description of error
Texture paint mode renders in solid color and the all other render modes "lookdev" are unavailable unless switching to other mode ex: object mode but then the texture paint context panel closes making it impossible to use texture paint or see what you are doing . When adding new textures and even normal maps they display as if base color.

How to recreate
Click on the texture paint tab and attempt to change the render mode to look dev. Then try to add a normal map to see that the normal map displays as if it is in the base color slot. Open the shader editor to see that the texture painting contextual menu closes automatically and cannot be opened again until returning to texture paint mode. Also, when viewing the shader editor see that the material is built correctly but in texture paint mode the overlay modes and rendering are broken.
Based on the default startup

After downloading to start blender.exe the program just doesn't start.

I'm unsure what the issue is here exactly.

If you don't want to see the actual texture you are painting on, you simply set the texture paint overlay opacity to 0.

Sebastian,

Sorry if I was not clear. Please see the video link below. In this video tutorial a previous version of blender from November 1st (Ver 2.80.29) has the ability to while in texture pain mode switch to lookdev mode. This allows the painter to mix their layers using the RGBMix node. The issue with the current texture paint mode is that when in texture paint mode the 3d view swaps to a flat shaded preview and no matter what render option you choose it always shows flat and will not show your edits to the nodes in the view. I have attached an image of a similar setup to this video but with the lookdev enabled but unable to show the layers interacting with one another. Being able to see the effect of a bumpmap as you paint is very valuable and is currently missing in the blender 2.8 due to this issue. To add to this issue if you exit texture paint mode to see your edits or work around the issue the contextual texture slots paint layer menu closes and will not allow you to bring it back up unless you re-enter texture paint mode preventing you from selecting colors or layers.

Sebastian Parborg (zeddb) claimed this task.

So see the final material in the viewport while painting, you simply click the Overlay drop down menu in the view port and set the texture paint overlay opacity to 0.

Sebastian,

Thanks for the clarification! This had been said to me before but I was previously mistakenly looking at the overlay menu in the contextual draw menu to the right of the UI Instead of the overlay drop down in the view port. Sorry for my confusion.
