Crash on Start - Multiple Windows Versions
Closed, ArchivedPublicKNOWN ISSUE

Description

Hi, I can reproduce this bug with multiple versions: 2.43 and all major previous releases. When I start blender on my PC (Windows 2000 SP4 with 1024 MB memory & NVIDIA GeForce 6200 A-LE with 256 MB) with both of the conditions below, I receive the following error:

"blender.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows"

To reproduce:
1) Set color settings to High Color (16 bit) or True Color (32 bit).

2) Right-Click on Desktop-> Properties-> Settings Tab-> Advanced-> Troubleshooting Tab
& pick any of the 4 highest hardware accelerations, from "Disable all DirectDraw and Direct3D accelerations, as well as any cursor and advanced drawing accelerations" up through "All accelerations are enabled."

3) Start Blender

If I either set color settings to 256 colors (which makes Blender unusable), or set the hardware acceleration to either of the two lowest settings "Disable all but basic accelerations" or "Disable all accelerations," Blender starts up fine.

I attached the part that's added to the Dr Watson log. Thanks!

Unfortunately there are driver settings that make opengl applications crash, we can really not do much about it (apart from using fewer opengl options...)

Be assured that you can get running Blender fine, also with accelleration set on a fast level. I cannot tell you really how... you might first check on the blender.org faq, and/or check on support forums, like blenderartists.org.

This is a generic request to test your bug report and see if it is still an issue in 2.5alpha2 if so please let me know by making a comment in this report ie 'also in 2.5alpha2' and I will add it to the 2.5 bug list.
