Behavior of New Scene's Link Object mode
Closed, ResolvedPublicDESIGN

Description

Currently Link Object option of New Scene drop-down menu actually also links collections (besides the 'master' one). This can quickly lead to weird situations:

  • If an object is in both master and some other collection of orig scene.
  • You create a new scene linking objects.
  • You use 'make single user' on object in new scene.
  • Now in orig scene you have two copies of the object:
    • Orig one in its master collection, and
    • New one in all other collections, since those collections are shared between both scenes…

Am fairly sure all collections should always be copied in that case, what do you think?

Personally, I'd be fine with renaming Link Objects to Link Collections and remove Link Object Data. The usefulness of these options was already debatable before 2.8 in my opinion. As far as I know the original purpose was to be have a copy of the scene contents but with different render or others scene settings.

If we want to keep Link Objects, then it should indeed duplicate the collections.

Also would not mind removing those two 'link' options, they have been rather painful to maintain/fix with the new collection paradigm, and never found them that useful either.

Talked with @William Reynish (billreynish) on IRC, and he does not care much either way, so he's not against removal.

Will rename 'link objects' to just 'linked', and remove the 'linked obdata' option.
