Blender crashes when zooming images
Closed, ArchivedPublicKNOWN ISSUE

Description

Repeatedly (about once in 10 minutes), when I'm using an alpha-blended background image and zooming the 3D-view with the mouse's wheel, Blender crashes. This may also happen when zooming the UV-editor's view port with an image there. I haven't noticed that any other actions would have caused this.

I have a very old laptop (COMPAQ Presario 900) with Athlon Xp 1800+ (1,53GHz) and an ancient graphics card (ATI Mobility U1 aka IGP 320). So this may be a partial reason but I haven't got this problem with any other programs. And I think the same happened with Blender 2.43 version too. With older versions I haven't been using bg images.

Maybe it's worth saying that the format of the image doesn't matter. I've used jpegs, pngs, gifs and bmps. All are causing the crash.

I can imagine it's annoying, but we just use very basic Opengl calls. When drivers don't implement opengl well, or have bugs, we cannot fix that.

I am 100% sure you can find the same crashes with applications using opengl to draw pixels and zoom with it too. It's just not very common...

Try to upgrade ATI drivers, check ATI driver settings, and search for fixes you can possibly do...

Yes, it's really annoying. Also trying to get best drivers is.

In fact, I've tried a lot different drivers. Compaq offers versions 1.0 A, B and C for this model on their support website. A works, B and C give a bluescreen during boot before Windows starts.

Sometimes when using Blender with version A drivers the whole machine crashes for a while. Then screen mode changes to VGA with 16 colors and a error msg tells that this Ati driver has crashed and won't work before reboot. Because of this I changed the drivers.

I found a modification tool which converts ATI catalyst driver (even the newest ones) somehow that it's usable with old gfx cards such as this IGP 320. With this modding Blender and all other programs have worked well, exept this crash. Fortunately I just found out that a new version of this tool is published. Hope it hepls...

This is a generic request to test your bug report and see if it is still an issue in 2.5alpha2 if so please let me know by making a comment in this report ie 'also in 2.5alpha2' and I will add it to the 2.5 bug list.
