I can confirm I see this issue with quadro 4000 series card. If I create a new general project and access materials, blender quits within a few seconds at most.

I've attached the system Info file from blender for your information. I also tried the last version before release that i had installed, RC2 and it behaves the same way. The development build of 2.81 Alpha from 6th August 2019 is also behaving in the same way.

I know a colleague who has a Quadro P5000 has no issue and I don't recall seeing it on a GTX 1060 either. Note: Can confirm no issue with a GTX 1060 so probably related to cards that are only supported by older drivers. However, in the case of the Quadro 4000 which is a decent card, this is really not ideal.

The drivers I mentioned are the only available drivers for the card, which I mentioned above. They have stopped issuing newer drivers so if it doesn't work with those, it won't work.

As it happens I got my PC replaced recently so for me it isn't an issue any more (RTX5000 + latest supported drivers = works fine, same version of OS) but it was incredibly frustrating before this happened.

The issue in the original report is for macOS and with a specific .blend file.

Crashes with a Quadro 4000 are unrelated, and we've had other reports confirming that installing the latest driver helps for that case, which is version 377.83.
